  • Martin, D., Gutstein, E., Civil, M., Cavell, H., Kondek, L., & Quintos, B. will present as part of a symposium entitled Bridging Community, Critical, and Classical Knowledge in Mathematics Education.
  • Abstract: In this session, we address the intersection of three forms of knowledge - community, critical, and classical - as they relate to mathematics education. Our concern with these relationships stems from our committment to principles of social justice and equity; it is through that perspective that we undertake this reearch. Each form has received some attention within the research, including how various dyads interrelate, but the synthesis of all three is underelaborated theoretically and we know of no practical examples that fully explore their interconnections and implications in the classroom. We examine what these knowledges mean; how they interrelate in theory, practice, and policy; how mathematics educators understand and enact thier dialectics; and we speculate what appropriate syntheses might look like.
